For Wealth Management Firms

Residency decides which state taxes what the managed assets earn.

A client who moves, or who spends meaningful time in more than one state, carries a question that no allocation model answers: which state may tax all of the income, and which may tax only what is sourced to it. California has no bright line of the kind New York provides. What it has instead is a facts and circumstances test, which means the outcome is decided by a record rather than by a day count.

Timing around a liquidity event

Whether a sale, an exercise, or a distribution was realized before a change in status, during it, or after it is frequently worth more than every other fact in the file combined. That is a planning question with a short window, and it is usually invisible until the return is prepared, by which point the window has closed.

No competition for the relationship

G&G does not prepare or file returns, does not manage assets, and does not provide investment advice. The engagement is a defined specialty that sits alongside the client's existing accountant and advisor, which means a referral adds a capability without introducing anyone who might absorb the relationship.
